The Divorce Comedy by Simone Moore
The Divorce Comedy is an interdisciplinary art experience centered on dissecting the absurdity of marriage, divorce and recovery of a Jamaican transport forced to suspend her spiritual truth and dreams, all in the name of LOVE. Do empowered women marry? If they do, who does the cooking? Do her hands itch from all that holding? Caution! This experience may cause involuntary laughter, periodic misty eyes and the sudden urge to rage against the machine!
Artist Statement
The hardest thing about having a colonial past is to INHABIT the utter presence of oneself. A self that for the stolen African can dangle, for a lifetime, if not reconciled, in a purgatory of self-denial and oppressive admiration. As a Jamaican born artist, my work is often in conflict and conversation with things the colonizer did and didn't do.
My work is focused on identity. My interest hovers primarily around the art of being present. My art is a reflection of my personal struggles to and through identity; it is an approach to reasoning my own being. I am a channel for divine creative expression to manifest and live. Using my passion for performance, movement, melody and images, I aim to channel the supernatural and chart a course that will challenge, shift and interrupt paradigms seeking to tyrannize the ex/internal reflections of self
